Session Planner - Super fresh

Communication is key! Please let me know if you at any stage are booked for an induction/c section or when you are having signs of labour starting. Then let me know when baby arrives and we will organise a time as soon as possible for me to come capture you and your new baby.

First thing to think about is where you would like your shoot to take place?

Super fresh sessions are taken ideally within the first 48hours after baby is born. However any time within the first 5 days depending on your recovery and my availability.

At hospital

Most super fresh sessions take place at hospital. There is something really iconic about the name tag on babys foot and being captured in the place your baby was born. I will come into hospital at 10am (during visiting hours) and bring with me just my camera. Capturing your fresh new baby in the hospital bassinet, on your lap and in your arms. Please know that if the OB/midwive need to come in I will pause the session and continue when they have finished. Your care is the most important thing right now.

At home

If you had a home birth or headed home shortly after birth and want to have the session in your own home then that's amazing. Having the session at home allows for a much more documentary style session. If you would like to include baby first bath, a shower with them, feeding in the bed, having a coffee cuddled up on the couch etc. We can capture a little more variety depending on what you would like. This is an opportunity to get more skin on skin images if you wish to apposed to hospital when there are always staff coming in and out you have a lot more privacy and control in your own home.

Next let's talk about when to have your session.

From a photographers perspective the best window of opportunity for super fresh photos is when baby is within 48 hours old.

Why? This is the next best thing to birth photography, capturing them so fresh. They change so quickly within the first few weeks and those early days become such a blur. The goal is to have baby content whether they are awake, asleep or feeding. I am there to document them as they are. I fully understand that at the time this may feel like the absolute last thing you want to do. You have literally just had your baby, you're in pain, you might have been up multiple times throughout the night, feel exhausted, the hormones are going crazy, your learning how do care for a newborn and you are so early postpartum. I have been there too. Give yourself grace, I am here to support you and make sure you're comfortable throughout the session. This is a time to lay in bed and enjoy staring at that beautiful baby you grew inside your belly.

Trust me it will be worth it.

What to wear for your session?

For mum I suggest having something that is postpartum and breastfeeding friendly (if you are able/choosing to breastfeed). Please do not expect to slip back into your jeans just after having your baby. Choose something that is easy and comfortable for you to wear for the whole day as you won't feel like dressing up and changing outfits. Most mums will wear a nice loungewear set or stretchy pants/leggings and a shirt, it's entirely up to you lighter colours are preferred.

I recommend having baby just in a nappy and wrapped in a blanket that way we can easily unwrap them during the session to capture their belly button, fingers and toes.

What does a super fresh session look like?

my workflow

We often start the session with bubs wrapped in the bassinet or in your arms. We will get some pictures with each parent them on your lap. I really love to unwrap baby blanket if they are content and capture their details. Perfect if they are awake asleep or if your baby needs a feed, a nappy change or anything during the session thats totally ok.

How to make the session feel like you?

  • Include a special heirloom blanket or some knitted booties that someones nana has knitted and lovingly passed down
  • Seek inspiration - have a look on Pinterest and if you see an image that speaks to you and want to put your own spin on let me know in the questionnaire
  • Enjoy the session I want you to look at your baby and touch their hands. Chat to your partner throughout it's a time to reflect on your experience becoming parents.
